Static vs Dynamic QR Codes: Which One Do You Actually Need?

Every QR code generator will let you make a code in seconds. The harder question is which kind of QR code you actually need — and that comes down to one thing: will the destination ever change after you print it?

Static QR codes

A static QR code's destination is fixed the moment it's created. Once it's printed, that destination is permanent — there's no edit screen, no way to redirect it elsewhere later.

That makes static codes a good fit for:

  • Packaging that won't be reprinted
  • A one-off flyer or event poster
  • Anything where the link genuinely never changes

They're also free forever, on any plan.

Dynamic QR codes

A dynamic QR code points to a short redirect link instead of the destination itself. That means you can change where it points after it's printed — the code on the poster, the menu, or the packaging never has to change.

This matters most when:

  • You're not 100% sure the link will stay the same
  • You want to update it seasonally (a menu, a promotion, a landing page)
  • You want to know how many people actually scanned it, and when

Dynamic codes also come with full scan analytics — device, location, and time. Static codes still get a lifetime scan count, just not the full breakdown.

The simple rule

If you'd be annoyed to reprint something because a link changed, use a dynamic QR code. If you'd never need to change it, static is simpler and free.

Not sure yet? Start dynamic — you can always treat it like a static one, but you can't go the other way without reprinting.

Once you're using dynamic codes, see how to track QR code scans to get the most out of the analytics, or running a QR code campaign if you're setting one up for a business.
