How to Track QR Code Scans: A Guide to QR Code Analytics

Print a QR code on a poster and it'll get scanned — or it won't — and you'll have no way to know which. That's the gap QR code analytics closes: turning a one-way printed link into something that reports back.

What QR code analytics actually measure

At minimum, useful QR code analytics answer four questions every time someone scans:

  • When — the exact date and time of the scan.
  • Where — the country and city the scan came from.
  • What device — mobile or desktop, and which browser and operating system.
  • How many — total scans, and how that count trends over days and weeks.

That's enough to tell whether a campaign is working, which location or print run is getting the most traffic, and whether your audience is scanning on their phones or at a desk.

How tracking actually works

Every EverScans QR code — static or dynamic — points through our own redirect service before it reaches its destination. That hop is what makes tracking possible at all: the printed code itself has no memory, but the redirect in between does, logging the scan before sending the visitor on.

What differs by plan isn't whether a scan gets logged, but how much detail you get to see afterward. On the free Starter plan, a static QR code shows you a lifetime scan count and nothing more. Dynamic QR codes get the full breakdown — device, location, and time — on every plan, and on Pro or Business, static QR codes get it too.

Reading the numbers

A scan count on its own is a vanity metric. It gets useful once you compare it against something:

  • Scans over time — a spike after a launch or a physical placement change tells you that specific change worked.
  • Device split — if 90% of scans are mobile, your destination page should be judged on mobile, not desktop.
  • Location — a QR code on packaging that ships nationally but only gets scanned in one city is telling you something about where it's actually being seen.

Getting analytics without reprinting anything

Because tracking lives in the redirect rather than the printed pattern, you can watch scans accumulate on a code that's already out in the world — on a poster, a product, or a menu — without ever changing what's printed. EverScans shows the full breakdown on every dynamic QR code, and on static QR codes too once you're on Pro or Business.

If you're deciding between a static and dynamic QR code in the first place, that decision usually comes down to whether you'll ever want to edit the destination — see our guide on static vs dynamic QR codes for the full comparison. If you're setting one up for an actual campaign, running a QR code campaign covers branding and expiry too.
