SMS QR Codes: Scan to Open a Pre-Filled Text Message

Texting a business often means saving an unfamiliar number first, then typing out a message from nothing. An SMS QR code removes both steps: scan it, and the phone's messaging app opens with the number and a message already filled in, ready to send.

What actually happens when you scan it

An SMS QR code opens the phone's default messaging app (iMessage, Google Messages, or whatever's installed) with a new text pre-addressed to the number you set, and — if you included one — the message already typed out. The person scanning still taps send themselves; nothing goes out automatically.

SMS vs WhatsApp QR codes

They look similar but reach different apps: an SMS QR code opens the phone's native texting app over the regular cellular network, while a WhatsApp QR code opens WhatsApp specifically. Use SMS when you can't assume the person has WhatsApp installed; use WhatsApp when your audience already lives there.
