WiFi QR Codes: Connect Guests Without Reading Out a Password

Spelling out a WiFi password character by character — capital letters, numbers, symbols — is the small daily friction of having guests. A WiFi QR code removes it: scan the code, and the phone connects on its own.

What actually happens when you scan it

A WiFi QR code encodes the network name and password directly, using the same format phones already understand for network sharing. Scanning it triggers the "Join this network?" prompt built into the phone's camera app — one tap to confirm, and the phone is connected. Nothing gets typed, and the password itself never has to be read aloud or handed over on a sticky note.

What goes on the card

• Network name (SSID) — exactly as it appears in WiFi settings
• Password
• Security type — WPA/WPA2 (the standard for almost every modern router) or open network with no password

That's the whole setup. There's no separate "connect" app required on the visitor's end — it works through the phone's own camera.

One thing worth knowing

If the WiFi password changes — a router reset, a new provider, a routine security update — a static WiFi QR code printed with the old password stops working and needs to be reprinted. A dynamic QR code avoids that: update the network details once, and the same printed code keeps working without a new sticker.
