WhatsApp QR Codes: Click-to-Chat Without Saving a Number
Handing someone your phone number only gets them halfway there. They still have to save it, open WhatsApp, start a new chat, and type something. A WhatsApp QR code skips all of that: scan it, and WhatsApp opens directly to a chat with you, ready to send.
How it actually works
A WhatsApp QR code encodes a wa.me link — WhatsApp's own click-to-chat format, built from a phone number and, optionally, a pre-filled message. Scanning it with a phone's camera opens WhatsApp (no app to install beyond WhatsApp itself) straight into that conversation. No account linking, no contact-saving step, and it works with a regular personal WhatsApp number exactly as well as a WhatsApp Business one.
The pre-filled message matters more than it sounds
Leaving the message blank still works, but a scanner lands on a blank chat and has to figure out what to say. A message like "Hi, I'd like to order a table for 2" or "I'm interested in the product on this shelf" does two things: it removes the awkward first-message hesitation, and it tells you exactly what someone wants before you've even replied. For a business, that's a small thing that measurably changes how many people actually follow through and send it.
Where it gets used
- Storefronts and retail — a sign at checkout or on a shelf tag, "message us for stock/sizing"
- Restaurant orders — a table tent for takeout or delivery orders
- Customer support — printed on packaging or an invoice, skipping a phone tree entirely
- Events and booths — a badge or banner that starts a conversation without a business card exchange
Static vs dynamic
A static WhatsApp QR code works permanently — right for a number that isn't changing, like a personal line or a stable support number. If the number behind it might change later (a new team member covering support, a business changing its main line), a dynamic QR code lets you update the destination without reprinting the sign, card, or packaging it's on.
