QR Code Size Chart: The Right Size for Every Scan Distance
The same QR code that scans instantly on a business card can fail completely once it's blown up onto a poster, or the reverse: a code sized for a banner looks comically oversized shrunk onto a receipt. Size has to match how far away the code will actually be scanned from. This chart covers the placements that come up most often.
The chart
| Placement | Typical scan distance | Minimum QR code size |
|---|---|---|
| Product label / sticker | 3-4 in (7-10 cm) | 0.6-0.8 in (1.5-2 cm) |
| Business card | 4-6 in (10-15 cm) | 0.8-1 in (2-2.5 cm) |
| Table tent / menu card | 8-12 in (20-30 cm) | 1-1.5 in (2.5-4 cm) |
| Flyer / brochure | 12-18 in (30-45 cm) | 1.5-2 in (4-5 cm) |
| Poster (indoor, eye level) | 3-5 ft (1-1.5 m) | 4-6 in (10-15 cm) |
| Storefront window / retail display | 5-10 ft (1.5-3 m) | 8-15 in (20-38 cm) |
| Vehicle wrap / large signage | 10-20 ft (3-6 m) | 15-24 in (38-60 cm) |
| Billboard | 20+ ft (6+ m) | 24-48 in (60-120 cm) or larger |
These are starting points, not hard limits - a busy background, low contrast, or cheap print quality all push the safe minimum size up further.
Where the numbers come from
Every row above follows the same rule: a QR code's printed width should be at least one-tenth of its expected scan distance. A code scanned from 10 feet away needs to be at least 12 inches wide; one scanned from 6 inches away can be under an inch. The closer-range rows (product labels, business cards) round up slightly past what the raw ratio suggests, since below a certain absolute size a phone camera struggles to resolve the individual modules cleanly regardless of distance.
For the reasoning behind contrast, quiet zone, and logo placement that also affect whether a given size actually scans, see QR Code Design: What Actually Makes One Scannable.
Always test the actual print
A chart gets you close. The only way to know a specific size works for a specific placement is printing one and scanning it with a real phone, from the real distance, under the lighting it'll actually be seen in. Paper stock, ink quality, and lamination can all shift how forgiving a given size is in practice.

Common questions
What is the minimum size for a QR code on a business card?
Around 0.8 to 1 inch (2 to 2.5 cm) per side. A business card is typically scanned from 4 to 6 inches away, and going much smaller risks the modules becoming too fine for a phone camera to resolve cleanly, even though the 1-in-10 distance ratio alone would suggest something smaller.
How big should a QR code be on a poster?
At least 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) per side for a poster typically viewed from 3 to 5 feet away. For a storefront window or retail display viewed from further back, size up to 8 inches or more.
Does a QR code need to be bigger the further away it's scanned from?
Yes. The rule that holds up in practice: a QR code's printed width should be at least one-tenth of the distance it's expected to be scanned from. A code sized correctly for a menu doesn't survive being shrunk onto a banner meant to be read from across a room.
What happens if a QR code is printed too small for its distance?
Phone cameras can't resolve the individual modules clearly enough to decode it, so scans fail or take several tries. This is one of the most common reasons a QR code that scans fine on a screen fails once it's actually printed and placed.
